For a « soft adventure » day, the Pamplemousses garden fascinates more than you'd expect: giant Victoria amazonica water lilies you could « almost sit on », tortoises, cannonball trees (entry Rs 300 adults, free under 5). Follow with the neighbouring L'Aventure du Sucre, whose kids' trail — audio headsets and a treasure hunt — reconciles the whole family with museums. Curious Corner in Chamarel and its upside-down house guarantee fits of giggles (Rs 350 – 450).
Three parental reflexes in Mauritius to finish: the sun bites from 9:30 am — UV rash guard non-negotiable, sunscreen every two hours; pharmacies sell everything needed for scrapes and mosquitoes (sprays suitable from 6 months); and Mauritians ADORE children — at the restaurant, don't be surprised if your baby is whisked off to the kitchen to meet the whole team. Local tip: the bread-butter-jam of village shops at snack time, with fresh pineapple juice, wins everyone over for Rs 60.
